Dom family (cremations)
. Manikarnika ghat is the main and most popular cremation ground in Kashi, where funeral pyres burn all day and all night.. The Dom families have been, through generations, the guardians of the sacred fire—for thousands of years. This fire is necessary for the funeral ceremonies.
. Each year there are more than 30,000 cremations in Kashi.
. The legend relates that here Lord Shiva in the form of Tarakeshwar whispers the Moksha Mantra into the ears of all the departed souls that arrive there.
. Those who die and are cremated here will reach the liberation from the cycle of births and re-births called Moksha.
